Our Kindergarten curriculum focuses on teaching children the delights of learning in a friendly and loving environment. Fun and colorful materials are used with many centers and hands-on activities to accommodate a variety of learning styles. The basic curriculum consists of Bible, Phonics (with Language Arts and Reading), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

Bible

Cornerstone kindergarteners learn about God through the lives of major characters throughout the Bible. In the Positive Action for Christ curriculum, stories and lessons highlight biblical doctrines, scriptural principles, and character traits. Class activities help students comprehend and apply Biblical truths.

Language Arts, Reading, and Phonics

Developed on a solid foundation of proven instruction and easy-to-manage organization, the Journeys reading program includes Adventure Units and Guided Reading with literacy expert Irene Fountas, plus differentiated instruction components for intervention.  Backed by proven results, Journeys is the most widely-used reading program in the country.

In additional to reading instruction, Cornerstone kindergarteners learn phonological awareness and decoding through Abeka phonics instruction.  In Letters and Sounds,  age-appropriate phonics exercises help students associate pictures and words, enhance vocabulary, develop reasoning and listening skills, and follow directions. Children apply this understanding of one and two-vowel words, special phonics sounds, and blends to create words, finish sentences, solve puzzles, and color pictures.

Mathematics

Elementary students utilize Houghton Mifflin’s Texas edition of GO Math! Teachers guide students through conceptual development, as students work from introduction to mastery of each topic.  Throughout the lessons, students will use manipulatives, models, quick pictures, and symbols as they apply Mathematical Practices to build understanding. Students are actively engaged in reasoning during instruction, so they are prepared to transition from concept or skills comprehension to solving problems in contextual situations.

Science

Kindergarten students utilize Pearson’s Interactive Science Texas edition to explore the world around them.  The text offers a broad survey of scientific fields of study covering  the nature of science, physical science, earth science, and life sciences.  At each grade level, the depth of material is expanded to increasingly build student knowledge and understanding of God’s creation.

Social Studies

The Houghton Mifflin Harcourt social studies curriculum for kindergarten offers an exploration of the world around us.  Students develop map and citizenship skills, safety awareness, and a broad overview of some American historical  figures.  Topics include citizenship, country, workers, and community.
